International President Receives Two Coveted Awards
McKinzie honored for professionalism and commitment to public service
International President Barbara A. McKinzie is the recipient of two awards: one acknowledges Alpha Kappa Alpha's impressive record of providing public service to communities worldwide and her role in leading the organization; the other pays tribute to her professionalism as a Certified Public Accountant.
Onyx Magazine, a lifestyle publication that promotes excellence, presented Alpha Kappa Alpha with its Public and International Service Award during a gala red-carpet black-tie event in Orlando, FL. McKinzie accepted on behalf of the 225,000 members in 975 chapters worldwide.
In presenting the award, publisher Lillian Seay hailed the Sorority for its 101-year history of being a trailblazer in its commitment to improving the lives of women and girls through educational services, healthcare initiatives and mentoring. Under McKinzie's leadership, that effort has expanded to include Black men and boys.
Augmenting the public service award from Onyx Magazine was the announcement that McKinzie will be presented the "Walking the Road Less Traveled" award by the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) when it holds its awards dinner—one of the highlights of its national convention—on June 20, in New Orleans.
A lifetime member of NABA, McKinzie was hailed for:
- Utilizing her accounting education and training as a springboard into a unique position;
- Holding a position of prominence;
- Being active in professional community organizations;
- Holding advanced degrees.
In each category, McKinzie's record was exemplary.
McKinzie said she was "delighted and humbled" by the awards and pledged to continue the good work that led to her being honored.
