Florida Commission recognizes outstanding contributions and service

Carolyn House Stewart, International First Vice President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, and a resident of Tampa, Florida was honored with the Florida Commission on Status of Women (FCSW) Achievement Award for her outstanding contributions and service.

The award was presented to Stewart and five other honorees during a reception September 7 on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa.

The FCSW recognizes meritorious women who have improved the lives of Florida women and have served as positive role models in their communities. Since its inception, 42 women have received this prestigious honor.

Stewart is a shareholder of the Macfarlane Ferguson and McMullen law firm, where she practices in the Tampa office in the areas of labor and employment law, personal injury, eminent domain, insurance defense, commercial litigation and products liability. Stewart, who is one of the few African-American women partners in a majority law firm in the United States, has made countless contributions to the community.

Stewart’s ascendance to national prominence with Alpha Kappa Alpha began when she was appointed program chair from 1998-2002 during the presidency of Norma Solomon White of Jacksonville. Dr. White also is a commissioner on the statewide panel.

From 2002-2006, she was the sorority’s International Secretary. In 2010, Stewart will be installed as International President of the Sorority during its convention in St. Louis.
