AKA Partners with Tom Joyner's Virtual College Fair

Program makes college selection decision easier

Alpha Kappa Alpha is a partner in the Tom Joyner Virtual College Fair. This novel program allows prospective students and their families to visit college booths—both mainstream, rural and lesser-known tenants—and get information about academics, the admission process, academic scholarships, majors and undergraduate and graduate programs and have their questions answered by recruiters from all over the country.

According to the BlackAmericaWeb site, the Fair also provides the opportunity to "visit" over 60 schools, many more than most students and their families could afford to physically explore on their own. Among the HBCUs and mainstream colleges set to participate are: Alabama State, Baylor, Cornell, Fisk, Kentucky State, Morehouse, Prairie View A&M, Spelman, Tuskegee, West Point Academy and Xavier.

At the virtual fair, booths are set up to allow students and or parents to speak with someone from each admissions office, get specific information about student activities and apply online.

In addition to saving time, visiting a selection of colleges all at once can save up to $3,000 in traveling expenses. Further, for the environmentally conscious, the family reduces its collective carbon footprint by eliminating car, bus, train or plane trips to check out campuses.

Just like those trips, however, it is wise for prospective students to do some research on the schools in which they are interested and ask questions about the size, location and type of college they are seeking.
