Member Nominates Sen. Joseph Biden for Vice Presidency
Lucas cites Biden's sponsorship of Violence Against Women Act in remarks
Alpha Kappa Alpha member Quincy A. Lucas was given an "opportunity of a lifetime" when she nominated U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden as the running mate of the Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Barack Obama.
Lucas, of Dover, DE, was chosen to nominate Biden at the Democratic National Convention in Denver because of her work advocating against domestic violence, an issue close to her heart. Her sister was killed by an ex-boyfriend in 2003.
Biden, who has represented Delaware for more than 30 years, sponsored the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, which led to tougher state and federal laws to protect women. The law was later expanded to include witness protection provisions for children.

"So it is in memory of my sister and in the name of women all across this country, that I'm proud to place into nomination the name of Joe Biden to be our next vice president," she declared.
With that, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, asked the convention delegates to officially accept Biden as the Democratic Party's candidate for vice president, and the cheering crowd endorsed the nomination.
In sharing the news with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, she characterized the opportunity as a "high honor."
The idea that the Obama-Biden ticket would "reach out to empower everyday individuals to go from ordinary to extraordinary and to serve is awesome!" she said, adding that she was proud to "let the world know that AKA produces members who are Exceptional, Service-oriented and Professional!"
A graduate of Delaware State University, Lucas was initiated into Delta Lambda Chapter in 2003. She is a member of Epsilon Iota Omega Chapter in Dover.
Married and the mother of three, Lucas is a fourth grade teacher at Silver Lake Elementary School in New Castle, DE.
