AKA Member Invited to Join Obama-Biden's Pre-Inaugural Whistle Stop Train

Quincy Lucas nominated Biden at convention

Alpha Kappa Alpha member Quincy A. Lucas, of Dover, DE, was among the group of "everyday Americans" who joined President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden when they journeyed to the nation's capital on their whistle stop tour. The train ride began in Philadelphia on Saturday, January 17, and ended in the nation's capital, where the duo was sworn into office.

Lucas' compelling story revolves around her sister, the late Dr. Witney Rose, a University of Maryland psychiatrist. In 2003, she was murdered by an ex-boyfriend. While jolted by the loss of her "best friend," Lucas used the tragedy as a motivator to fight against domestic violence.

In announcing the names of those selected to join the Obama-Biden train to history, Josh Earnest, a spokesman for the Inaugural Committee, noted: "Each one of these families has their own remarkable story to add to our American story, and we're thrilled they've agreed to join us as we travel to Washington."

Supporting her efforts was Delaware Sen. Joe Biden who sponsored the Violence Against Women Act in 1994. This led to tougher state and federal laws to protect women against domestic violence. The law was later expanded to include witness protection provisions for children.

Lucas joined the historic train ride in Wilmington, DE, where she boarded the train with Vice President-elect Biden. In Baltimore, she made brief remarks.

In his speech during the stop in Baltimore, MD, President-elect Obama praised Lucas and her advocacy.

During the train ride, Quincy sat between Obama and his wife, Michelle, where she got a chance to make a special connection with the First Couple. Later, in an interview on Larry King Live on CNN, she referred to the experience as "awesome." She said she had tickets to all the inaugural events, including the swearing-in and the balls.

Quincy first came to prominence at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, where she nominated Biden to be vice president. In her remarks, she cited his advocacy against domestic violence.

A graduate of Delaware State University, Lucas is a fourth grade teacher at Silver Lake Elementary School in New Castle, DE. She is a member of Epsilon Iota Omega Chapter in Dover.
