Sorority Forms Partnership with Voter Advocacy Legal Organization

Free hotline is 1-866-OUR-VOTE

Alpha Kappa Alpha has formed an alliance with the Chicago-area Election Protection coalition to ensure that all eligible voters have an opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot in the November 2008 election.

Staffed by a team of lawyers, the organization is on hand, on or before Election Day, to answer questions or help with problems about voting or voter registration. The free hotline is 1-866-OUR-VOTE.

Putting enforcement measures in place to protect voters' rights and to ward off any schemes aimed at suppressing the vote or preventing citizens from voting lies at the core of AKA's service mission and why the Sorority supports this program.

The coalition will help voters again on Election Day, November 4, 2008, and will be staffed by dozens of legal volunteers who will handle calls from voters. Additionally, Chicago-based lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis LLP will organize a field program consisting of mobile field attorneys and poll monitors who will be deployed on Election Day to respond to problems experienced by voters. Litigation teams also are prepared to go to court to vindicate voters' rights.

AKA's international president Barbara A. McKinzie is urging citizens to monitor the election and, when a question arises or if voter schemes are suspected, call the free hotline: 1-866-OUR-VOTE. Help will be provided.
