Welburn Elected Chair of Major Education Alliance
AKA member to lead National Association of State Boards of Education
Alpha Kappa Alpha member Brenda Welburn was elected chair of the Learning First Alliance (LFA) for 2008-2009. Her term began July 1.
The Learning First Alliance includes every major public education organization in the nation and represents the millions of people—parents, educators and policymakers—who work for public school children every day. Together, they have the insight and power to promote innovation and excellence in every public school, and to enrich the national discussion about school improvement.
Welburn is currently executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), and the LFA chair position rotates among leaders of its member organizations.
In announcing the election, Welburn said, "Americans are looking for innovative and practical solutions to our biggest educational challenges. Educators and community members are already implementing such solutions in outstanding schools and districts across the country. If we do everything we can to support and promote them, these innovations will add up to an exciting future for public education."
Welburn is a member and former president of Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter of Fairfax, VA. She was initiated into Alpha Chapter at Howard University in 1969.
